Why so sad, emo kid?

It's been a long time since I've updated--things have gotten very hectic here in Prague 2. :)

Last weekend, Sunny, Dot and I saw Spiderman 3. Sunny commented on the movie most elegantly in her blog, so go read up on her take. I made a comment during and after the movie that seems to have baffled my friends (I tend to do that a lot lately), I said that Spiderman had emo hair when he was wearing the black suit.

Dot didn't know what emo meant or what emo hair was, so I have turned to the great Wikipedia to enlighten her. :)
Here is what the wiki entry had to say: Emo is a slang term used to describe a range of fashion styles and attitudes somewhat affiliated with emo music and its related scene. As an adjective, emo can describe a style of fashion or music, or a general state of unhappiness or melancholy (as in to "feel emo"). Emo is also used as a noun, often pejoratively, to identify a member of the "emo scene" or someone viewed as fitting the "emo" stereotype easily being characterized by a straightened side-part hairstyle covering one eye.

Here is Peter Parker with his normal hair, and here is a picture of Spiderman/Peter Parker after donning the black suit:

And here is a picture from the Wiki entry on emo, describing "typical male" emo hair as black with long bangs brushed to the side. Hey, except for the color, that could describe my hair!

So Excited

As my friends and family know, I am a pop culture junkie. I sometimes drift off into daydreams where I am working in the entertainment industry (mostly working for TV Guide or Entertainment Weekly), just so I can be there for the newest stuff. One of my favorite parts of pop culture is the movie trailer (only when they don't give away the entire movie, which happens all too often). Since most of the movie trailers that I get to see in the cinemas here are dubbed in Czech, my entertainment value goes way down. I usually depend on Coming Soon to get my trailer fix, but I just discovered today that iTunes also has movie trailers available. And they're free. And I can download them to my computer and watch whenever I want. And I can get trailers formatted for my video iPod. I know that sometimes I'm slow on the uptake, but this has made my week! I watched the latest Spiderman 3 trailer, the POTC: At World's End trailer, Harry Potter & OOTP, and Ocean's 13. That's just the tip of the iceberg. I feel that this is going to be dangerous knowledge.

Did you know that Harry Potter comes out July 13, in IMAX too? I'm gonna be home then, and I am so going to see it at the IMAX theatre. It will be an early birthday present for myself.

So so excited!

TMNT

I'm surprised my eyeballs are still in their sockets. Sunny and I went to see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie tonight. Totally my choice, so Sunny has me to blame that we will never recover those two hours of our time.

Anywho, I didn't realize that the entire movie was CGI, but when I did I was afraid that it would be dubbed in Czech and that we had wasted the free movie passes. Fortunately for us, it was in English, but that was it's only saving grace. That and the fact that Sunny got a free TMNT poster.

The movie itself was very eyeroll inducing in the extreme. The only thing of note in the movie is that Master Splinter likes to watch his "stories," including Gilmore Girls! I can totally see him as a Luke/Loralei shipper. ;)

And I'm Telling You . . .

My friend Sunny and I went to see the movie musical, "Dreamgirls" last night. It was wonderful. I had some doubts about it initially, but I wanted to see it, partially due to Jennifer Hudson's awards--to see if she lived up to the hype. OMG, it was so good! Everyone was phenomenal--Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, Danny Glover, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose, even Beyonce. I had my doubts about her, as I had only seen her in Austin Powers: Goldmember before. She blew me away--her transformation from the meek Deena at the start of the film to the Deena who stood up for herself at the end was great. I also really enjoyed the actor who played Effie's brother C.C., Keith Robinson. He was not only wonderful, he's gorgeous! Plus, any movie that can have both Urkel and Jim Halpert in it is wonderful in my book. ;)The music and choreography in this film is phenomenal. I want to see it again, so that I can pay more attention to it, especially the choreography. What a film.

When Jennifer Hudson sang "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going," I cried. She has a phenomenal voice, and this was a standout performance. It reminded me, briefly, of one of my favorite movies, "Camp". It's also a musical (I'm sensing a theme here) set at a summer performing arts camp. Throughout the film, they stage different numbers from
Broadway shows, including the number "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" from "Dreamgirls." The difference in this film, though, is that the girl playing Effie is a 17 year old white girl wearing a huge beehive hairdo, and she's singing to an 8 year old boy. ;) Not exactly in the same vein as Jennifer Hudson's performance, but I enjoyed both. If you love musical theatre, you should check out "Camp".
